From time to time, it is a good idea to have a good sort through and declutter your surroundings. Although this can be time-consuming, it can also be very therapeutic. Set aside one or two days in a row, get out your slobbiest of outfits, turn your music up, and just hit a room. The important thing is to not stop until that room is fully decluttered. If you find you have plenty of time before you can call it quits, move on to the next room, and so on.
Undoubtedly, before you start, it is a good idea to have in mind what you are going to do with the items that you are going to ‘retire’. With this in mind, you will be able to set out boxes to fill or piles to make which you will be able to take action with rather than having the clutter laying around waiting for you to deal with it.
#1 Donate Them to Local Charities
There are plenty of charities that like to have items to sell in their thrift stores to bring additional money in for their cause. Of course, any clothing, soft furnishings, or shoes will have to have wear left in them and you must check the charities that you have in mind will take books, CDs, or DVDs before you bag these items up.
#2 Sell the Items via Social Network Sites or Websites, Such as Ebay
If you feel that you would rather first see if you can make a few dimes for yourself before donating them, there are other options open to you other than holding a yard sale. For instance, you can see if anyone in your local area would be interested in purchasing them by advertising the items on your social media marketplace page.
If you feel that you would want a little more money for these items, you may be tempted to put them up for sale on websites such as eBay or Gumtree, although you may have to post these items to any buyers.
#3 Upcycle the Items So You Can Fall in Love with Them All Over Again
There is, of course, a third option. Although it doesn’t necessarily help with decluttering, it can move them to be useful in other ways. This is in the art of upcycling. For instance, you could find that you have a multitude of different t-shirts. Too many, in fact, to wear a different one every day for a month let alone a week.
These t-shirts are no doubt clogging up your storage area and taking up space that could be used for other highly desirable garments (like different t-shirts). There is a way in which you will not necessarily need to part with them and this is by turning them into a my t-shirt blanket. A blanket is by far more versatile than a bunch of unworn t-shirts, as you can use it as a throw over a couch or your bed, or use it as a cuddle blanket for those cooler evenings in front of the TV with your favorite person.
Final Thoughts
A good, intense decluttering session has to be organized. Knowing exactly what you are going to do with the clutter when the day is over is just as important as the decluttering session itself.
However, to get it done, you are not going to want distractions, so it is good to clear your schedule for a day. Make sure that you have plenty of nibbles in the house, roll up your sleeves, and get that energetic music playing. After all, there is no rule about not having boogie breaks.
